There are 8 vowels in Lakhota, 5 oral and 3 nasalized.
The three nasal vowels are pronounced as follows:
ą: aŋpétu
toháŋ
čhaŋkú
waŋží
iŋ: íŋkpa
íŋyaŋ
khiŋíŋ
wíŋyaŋ
uŋ: úŋyaŋ
uŋspé
kaúŋka
nakúŋ
múŋ
Transcription note:
Far most spelling systems mark nasality of vowels with Greek eta (ŋ) following
the vowel (aŋ, iŋ, uŋ).
Some transcriptions (Boas & Deloria, Colorado University) use nasal hook
under the vowel (ą, į, ų).
Some traditional orthographies (Riggs, native) mark nasality only with the letter
"n". This is non-phonemic as it is not always clear whether an "n"
is a consonant or a nasality mark, see these examples:
wanúnyakapi = waŋúŋyaŋkapi,
(not wanúŋyaŋkapi)
thanín = thaŋíŋ (not thaníŋ)
