Lakhota vowels



There are 8 vowels in Lakhota, 5 oral and 3 nasalized.

The three nasal vowels are pronounced as follows:

Transcription note:
Far most spelling systems mark nasality of vowels with Greek eta (ŋ) following the vowel (aŋ, iŋ, uŋ).
Some transcriptions (Boas & Deloria, Colorado University) use nasal hook under the vowel (ą, į, ų).
Some traditional orthographies (Riggs, native) mark nasality only with the letter "n". This is non-phonemic as it is not always clear whether an "n" is a consonant or a nasality mark, see these examples:

wanúnyakapi = waŋúŋyaŋkapi, (not wanúŋyaŋkapi)
thanín = thaŋíŋ (not thaníŋ)
